Looking Beyond Blood Sugar

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is often described as a disease of high blood sugar. In reality, blood sugar problems usually reflect deeper changes in how your body handles energy.

In type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, the body's cells stop responding well to insulin, the hormone that moves sugar out of the blood and into the cells. This is called insulin resistance, and it often develops quietly for years before a diagnosis.

Type 1 diabetes is different. It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Learn more on our autoimmune disease page.

Diabetes is rarely caused by a single factor. It is usually the result of several systems gradually moving out of balance. The good news is that the body often responds well when those imbalances begin to improve.

What You May Notice

Common Signs and Symptoms

Early insulin resistance often has no clear symptoms. As blood sugar control changes, you may notice:

01
Thirst and Frequent Urination Feeling thirsty often and needing to urinate more than usual.
02
Fatigue Low energy and crashes, especially after meals.
03
Cravings and Weight Gain Strong cravings for sugar or carbohydrates and weight that settles around the middle.
04
Blurred Vision Vision that seems to change or blur from day to day.
05
Slow Healing Cuts and sores that take longer than usual to heal, or frequent infections.
06
Tingling or Numbness Tingling, burning, or numbness in the hands or feet.
The Deeper Drivers

Root Causes We Look For

Blood sugar problems often reflect deeper metabolic dysfunction. We look for the drivers behind the numbers:

01
Insulin Resistance Cells that no longer respond well to insulin, often years before blood sugar rises.
02
Inflammation and Mitochondrial Dysfunction Ongoing inflammation and struggling cellular energy production.
03
Hormonal Imbalance and Stress Hormone shifts and chronic stress physiology that push blood sugar up.
04
Hidden Infections Hidden infections, including in the jaw, that can add to inflammation.
05
Diet, Sleep, and Activity Ultra-processed foods, sleep deprivation, and inactivity that impair healthy metabolism.
06
Toxins and Gut Health Environmental toxins and poor gut health that interfere with healthy function.

Insulin resistance means your cells no longer respond well to insulin, so your body has to make more of it to keep blood sugar in range. It often develops years before a diabetes diagnosis.

Yes. Prediabetes is an important window. Addressing insulin resistance early can support your long-term metabolic health.

No. Do not stop or change any medication on your own. We work alongside your current care, and any medication change should be made with the provider who prescribed it.
